Parenting Through Challenging Times

Being a parent in Northwest Rodney over the past few years has been tough for a lot of families. COVID, the cost of living, rapid development, and natural disasters have left many of us feeling overwhelmed. Tamariki have also experienced challenges, with disruptions in school and social life, displacement due to floods and slips, and the anxiety that surrounds extreme weather events.

While change and uncertainty are normal parts of life, for many of us, the sheer scale and frequency of change over the past few years have outpaced our resilience, causing us to feel overwhelmed. This is reflected in the huge jump in the number of families & whānau accessing our family support services, with many parents seeking support for their children as well.

With these pressures in mind, Kindred Family Services teamed up with Parenting Place to create something specifically tailored to the needs of North West Rodney parents and caregivers. The result is a free workshop named ‘Parenting Through Challenging Times’, that draws extensively on research, and is delivered in the entertaining and practical approach that The Parent Place is well-known for. This 90-minute workshop introduces parenting strategies and concepts to support our Tamariki through times of change, uncertainty, heightened anxiety and Trauma.

For children who have been through uncertain times, a strong relationship with a parent or caregiver is by far the most important factor in a child’s development trajectory into a healthy, resilient adult. It is our hope that Parenting Through Challenging Times will re-enforce what the parents of North-West Rodney communities are already doing well, and provide a few new tools and strategies for supporting children in these uncertain times.
